Emil Michael Szten

Emil Michael Szten, age 99, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2017.  He was born in Muskegon, Michigan and was the son of Nickolaus and Helen Szten.

A graduate of Michigan Technological Institute, he received a degree in civil and mechanical engineering in 1941.   Emil served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and participated in the building of the USS Wisconsin.

Following his military service, Emil worked at Borg Warner Corporation, Ingersoll Division in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  There, he designed amphibious vehicles including the LVT and the LARC.  After moving to Washington D.C., Emil supervised the development of the M-1 battle tank, and Black Hawk helicopter at the U.S. Army Material Command.  After retirement, he could be found on the golf course or designing and making furniture.

Emil was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret K. Szten; with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage.  His second wife, Joyce Hickson, died in 2014.

Emil is survived by his daughter and son-in-law; Penny and Tom Sebrell, his granddaughter Maggie Breed Wilson, Maggie’s husband, Justin and his great-grandchildren, Meigs and Davis Wilson.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 16, 2017 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Remembrances can be made to Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan or The American Lung Association.
